Statistics show that almost 99 percent of people who go on diets fail to achieve their weight-loss goals. Almost 100 million adult Americans are considered overweight, and the US is not alone in seeing rising obesity among its population.
Many of us have tried one type of diet or another before without success, or with limited initial success but no long lasting results. How many of us are sick and tired of fad diets, magic pills and quick-fixes? For most of us, focussing on a single diet program alone is insufficient. The best and correct way to lose weight sensibly, successfully and healthily is to employ an optimal combination of diet (eating more of the good foods, less of the not-so-good ones) and exercise (fitness, endurance training, strength training). If you want to shed pounds then remember that losing weight properly is a commitment over time and should be done gradually and healthily. If you go on a crash diet and lose weight quickly, you are likely to gain everything back and more. Also if you are slimming down rapidly you are probably losing water weight or lean muscle mass instead of fat. If the way you reduce your calories is too fast too furious, the body goes into shock or starvation mode where it retains body fat in anticipation of less to come. So if it’s so difficult, what should I do?
Well, the best advice that we can give is to always consult with a doctor first before embarking on any weight loss or exercise program, regime, medication or drug. You can find qualified doctors online here:
If you are ready and want to lose some weight, here are our top tips:
1. Balanced, sensible diet: If you are determined to shed pounds, you have also actually made a decision to eat more healthily. Choose your food wisely, and eat a range of natural foods (as opposed to processed) in moderation
2. Five portions of fruits and vegetables a day: By fulfilling this criteria, there is less stomach space for other more unhealthy, fattening foods
3. 3 square meals a day: Skipping meals or eating fewer meals in a day does not make you lose fat. Instead you lose lean muscle mass, and risk the chance of your body going into shock (brought about by a fake sense of starvation) and storing more fat for itself. Eat 3 meals a day, but eat less
4. Eat like a king at breakfast, like a prince during lunch, and a pauper at dinner: Self-explanatory
5. Eat breakfast: This is your most important meal, so make sure you eat, and eat well. Have a hearty breakfast that will perk you up and keep you going for the day. You will burn the calories throughout the day and it is much better than a heavy dinner
6. Eat small portions at regular intervals: The trick is to drip feed small quantities of food to your body so that it does not store them up, but burn them up
7. Chew: Yes, chewing your food properly aids digestion
8. Eating right: Click here for more information on how to eat right
9. Drink more water: A lot of it at regular hourly intervals helps you to eat less. Drinking two to three litres of water daily also flushes out all the toxins in your body and aids digestion
10. Limit your alcohol intake: Alcohol, especially beer, is a calorie bomb so reduce your intake, and abstain if possible
11. Get company: Get your spouse, partner, family member, loved one or best friend to do it with you and you will be more motivated to carry on
12. Exercise: All diet and weight loss plans should be complemented with an exercise plan. Click here for more information on exercise

Various Diet Programs, Plans and Schemes
Traditional diets do work but for a limited time only – you see fast results, lose a visible number of pounds and feel good about yourself. But because your body has been starved of the nutrients it needs, it makes you go back to the way you were eating before.
A lot has been said about Weight Watchers, and they are indeed successful to a certain extent. Burn more calories than you eat equal weight loss is a simple equation, and to have a support group encouraging each other and sharing experiences keeps participants on track. It has been proven to work, but once you start to wean off the support group or program, you do tend to start to balloon. This is generally true for most diet programs that includes intake of supplements, calorie counting and focus group meetings.
A lot more has been said about the Atkins Diet. It actually consists of four diets and is divided into phases. The first Induction Phase lasts for two weeks and restricts your daily intake of carbohydrates to 20 grams or less. The second Ongoing Weight Loss phase allows you to consume more carbohydrates. The Atkins method might work for some but not as well for others.
